Lash Extensions: Worth it for your big day?

I wish their was a straight forward answer for you, but, it depends. Each individual bride will have to weigh the pros and cons of getting lash extensions and ultimately make this personal decision based on what makes it worth it, or not, for her individually.

 Pros:

  • customized to your eye shape & face shape if you have a good artist

  • many looks are achievable: length, thickness, different curl patterns, singles v. volume lashes: 2d, 3d, 4d, etc.

  • faster morning routine on an everyday basis since you don't have to wear mascara

  • awesome for a low maintenance makeup routine on your honeymoon

  • dramatic lashes look gorgeous in photos

  • they will make you feel glamorous from your rehearsal dinner, to your big day, and as a newlywed, regardless of whether you’re hopping on a plane to honeymoon

Cons:

  • allergic reactions can begin at ANY time while wearing (1st time or a year in, there’s still a risk)

  • ingredients of adhesives regularly change and are not regulated

  • professional training is going to yield a more natural look, as an educated lash artist is going to consider the weight of the extension on your own, natural lash.

  • depending on your natural lash strength, length, and volume, you may not be able to achieve your desired look, or an undertrained tech could give you lashes too heavy for your own which leads to damage

  • fills require frequent visits

  • you should sleep on your back to avoid twisting lashes and damage

  • lashes must be regularly combed, and cleaned (unfortunately, more so than some people wash their face)

  • if you tend to wear eyeshadow, it will fall out onto lashes and you'll end up cleaning them or wearing mascara that's allowed over them anyway

  • many people complain of "baby lashes" after removal of extensions.  (Lash growth has 3 phases, anagen (growing), catagen (slowing), telogen (shedding). This means they see more lashes in the beginning of the "growing" phase, so they look little.  Longer natural lashes may not "rest" as long before they reach "shedding".

So, are lash extensions right for you? There is no right or wrong answer!  If you sleep comfortably on your back and don't have sensitive or dry eyes, I say give it a shot! :)  Please, just make sure you try them beforehand and don’t get them for the first time just before your wedding. If you are low maintenance with your makeup routine, but good about keeping up with "girly" things (ie. nail appointments, monthly hair trims, etc.), lash extensions may be right for you.  Keep in mind, you'll go every 2-3 weeks for a refill. If you toss, turn, have had any sensitivities to any cosmetic products, or aren't the best about following a strict routine to care for and/or keep up with them, I'd pass.

It’s worth noting that on wedding days, I often see one or two lashes that just completely point in the wrong direction.  I cannot always fix this on the wedding day because it’s already twisted the natural lash.  It's something you won't notice in your wedding photos unless it's a very close beauty shot, but it will be visible in person. If you do plan on wearing them for your wedding, you should have them on at your preview session so we can adequately gauge your shadow height, liner thickness, etc. If the extensions are longer and thicker than a lash we applied at your preview, all other components of the eye look must also be exaggerated so the look does not become lost behind the lashes.
